Changing Behaviors Can Help Reduce Risk of Digestive Ailments

We hear it all the time: If you want to avoid gastric upset, pay attention to diet and exercise. But in addition to the things we should do to stop constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids and other gut problems, there are some “don’ts” out there as well to help us along.

A big “don’t,” for example, is don’t overeat. Even if your plate is filled with fruits, vegetables and fiber, shoveling it in not only won’t help you get to, or maintain that trim waistline, it can also cause all sorts of digestive chaos. Long story short, all that extra food means that the entire digestive system, from mouth to stomach to small intestine and colon, has to work harder than they should.

That overwork can lead to everything from constipation to diarrhea. What’s more, any or all of those can up your chances of developing colon cancer, so it’s important to make sure that you’re eating reasonable portions, at the right time of day, to maintain optimum digestive health.
